This classic novel from Charles Dickens follows the fortunes of a shipping firm owner. His frustrations at not having a son to follow in his footsteps lead him to initially reject his daughter's love before reconciling before his death. The son Dombey does have is sickly and despite stays at a health centre and slight health improvements, he does not and cannot be the son Dombey wishes for. The classic Dickens themes follow arranged marriage, betrayal, and social class relations.
