This is a very good hardcover in slipcase. Printed for Heritage Press by Cambridge University, The Centenary Edition. This copy is particularly clean. Pages inside are crisp and clean, free of markings. The binding is tight and straight. No foxing etc. The marvelous illustrated cover is very good front and back with only a hint of shelf wear. The black slipcase is very good, has minor wearing top edges and corner but overall very good.
The Newcomes was published serially over the course of several years and the events in the novel occur over several years and in several countries. Some of the characters in Thackeray's acclaimed Vanity Fair occur in The Newcomes, as the novel is set a decade of two after the action of Vanity Fair. The term capitalism is coined in the book as we see a theme that runs through the novel is the practice of marrying for money. Methodism is another theme seen in the novel.
