This is a very good hardcover with dust jacket. This copy is the Eighth Printing 1980 University of Texas Press. It is very good inside and out. The pages are still crisp and clean, free of markings. The binding is tight and straight. Tan hardcover boards under jacket are like new. The dust jacket is showing some wear, rubbing at top and corners but overall still very good considering shelf wear age.
This book, out of print and in continuous demand, is the only complete and authoritative work on the Texas Rangers and frontier history. Written by one of the great American historians of all time, the book developed rom Webb's own experience with the Texas Rangers and from the stories they told.
In the early days of Texas, when men moved in ahead of legalized power, they made their own rules with little regard for property or person. In addition, peaceful settlers intent on developing areas claimed by Indians, and disputes over the Texas-Mexican border made for a truly Wild West devoid of law and lawmen.
Into this situation rode a small but determined group of med destined to become a model for state law enforcement. They called themselves the Texas Rangers and they knew how to ride and shoot and they knew what had to be done and set out to do it. They had the courage to uphold the rights of free men and they tried to do good as they saw it.
This book tells the complete story as the author spent 14 yrs writing the book and rode with the Rangers in the days when desperate, greedy men sought to win the day with lawlessness.
