This is a very good hardcover, no dust jacket. First Edition 1940 Knopf Publishing. This copy is clean inside and out. Pages are free of markings, they do have light natural tanning from age but very clean. The black hardcover boards are very good, there is wear at bottom corners and top edge of spine, see photos. The binding is tight and straight. Nice collectible reduced from wear.
Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, and essayist and Nobel Prize Laureate in 1929 for his great novels, Buddenbrooks and Magic Mountain. In the first World War, Mann had been a patriot, even defending the sinking of the Lusitania, but changed his views on German militarism as World War Two approached and German politics shifted. In this book he makes an impassioned plea for civilized values.
