This is a very good hardcover, dust jacket poor. 1946 Reprint from Random House Publishing. This copy is very good regarding the hardcover itself. Octavo, inside pages very clean, light natural tanning from age but free of markings etc. No serious foxing, overall no foxing seen, just light tanning. Binding tight and straight. The dust jacket is poor. It is torn as seen in photos, no attempt has been made to tape or repair jacket. Jacket left as acquired. This reprint edition is a nice copy for any literary library.
Irish writer James Joyce saw this novel first serialized in parts in the American Journal. On his 40th birthday in 1922 it was first published in its entirety in Paris by Sylvia Beach, proprietor of the Paris bookstore Shakespeare and Company. All the action in the novel takes place on a single day in June 1904. It is constructed as a modern parallel to Homer's Odyssey. The novel celebrates the strength of spirit required to endure the trials of everyday life. One could say that nothing much happens in the novel, yet the story encompasses all of life itself.
