This is a rare collectible hardcover. 1929 Harper & Brothers Publishing. This copy is very good. It has natural tanning to pages from age but they are very good, clean and unmarked. The binding is tight and straight. Between pages 96-97 is the only spot showing binding wear. Pages are all tight. Illustrated full color frontispiece on cover very good. Overall hardcover is very good with mild wear. Minor bump front bottom corner, one spot fading back cover. Nice collectible copy outlining favorite Dickens characters.
This book is illustrated by George Alfred Williams with full color frontispiece and full page plates. There are 10 character sketches including Tiny Tim, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Kit Nubbles, Tommy Traddles, "Deputy", Jo, The Crossing Sweeper, Pip and Paul Dombey.
The complete stories of the boys is highlighted by the illustrations. Charles Dickens was a loyal champion of all boys, and underlying his portrayals of them was an earnest desire to remedy evils which he had found existing in London. David Copperfield early life was a picture of Dickens own childhood, Oliver Twisetand the miserable wretches at Dotheboy Hall were no mere creations of his imagination. They were descriptions of living boys, the victims of tyranny and oppression which Dickens felt he must alleviate. This book highlights the characters and illuminates the author for the reader.
