This is one of the 21 volume set of The Oxford Illustrated Dickens. Originally published in 1954 and reprinted in 1989. This collectible set is considered one of the most comprehensive illustrated Dickens available. Each volume contains original illustrations, many of which were contained in the works first editions. The text is derived from the Charles Dickens Edition, revised by the author in the 1860's.
These stories were written for the Christmas editions of Household Word, a periodical later incorporated into All the Year Round. The first stories are spirited, nostalgic and at times even sentimental. Before long, as Margaret Lane notes in her Intro, there is a change; the complacent family cozied around the fire, warm and well-fed, must be made to look beyond the plush curtains and solid walls and Liston to another radical voice. But, the stories are not sermons, they are thought-provoking and entertaining. Several of the stories were written in collaboration with Wilkie Collins.
