This is a wonderful edition of The Works of Rabelais, Gargantua and Pantagruel. This copy is very good condition. 1930 Washburn Publishing. It is very clean inside. Pictures will show some foxing inside front and back endpapers but the text pages have little to no foxing and are just showing light natural tanning from age. Brown hardcover boards with gold lettering are very good, just a hint of shelf wear from age. NO slipcase, slipcase MISSING. The binding is tight and straight. Sewn binding very, very good and sturdy.
Rabelais was born approx 1494 and died in 1553. He was a French Renaissance writer, physician and Greek scholar. His writing were famed for satire, grotesque jokes and song. Known as a free thinker, his work showed both sensitivity and critique toward the great questions of his time. He fought for tolerance and peace, and attacked the abuses of princes and men of the Church. Gargantua and Pantagruel is considered is best work and certainly is his best known. the word Rabelaisian was coined to describe his life and work, along with his literary legacy. The word is defined as something "marked by gross robust humor, extravagance of caricature".
Gargantua and Pantagruel relates the adventure of two giants, Gargantua and his son. The chapters are often humorous, wildly fantastic and often absurd. This is the first two books in the Gargantua series of 4 or 5 (manuscript unfinished).
