This is a very good hardcover with dust jacket. 1942 First Edition Knopf Publishing. This copy is very good inside. Pages are crisp and clean still, free of markings. The binding is tight and straight. Octavo, deckle cut page edges. Please note; there is some foxing on side edges of pages but does not carry over to inside pages (see photo pls). Green hardcover boards are like new with only a hint of shelf wear at corners. Green hardcover boards with gold lettering. The dust jacket is acceptable. It has significant shelf wear (see photos) including tears along bottom edge and spine. But an acceptable dust jacket is better than no dust jacket in most cases, so the dust jacket is included with this copy. The text of jacket is legible and mostly intact with tears occurring along edges. The inside pages are free of foxing with only a hint of natural tanning from age.

On Jan. 7th, 1842, the first issue of the Cleveland Plain Dealer saw the light. It was a typical weekly, issued in a community of about 6,000 souls and devoted to the task of spreading the gospel of Jeffersonian Democracy in the Western Reserve. The contents were not fresh or full but its editorials were forthright and spirited. It found itself in warfare with its non-Democratic contemporaries and its circulation was a few hundred at best. Yet, it survived and thrived.
This is the story of a newspaper, its history, its impact and its importance. The author was a member of the Plain Dealers staff for 39 yrs., and its chief editorial writer for many of those. This was his first book. Foreword for the book, Paul Bellamy was also a member of the Plain Dealer staff and one time director of the Associated Press.
