This copy is a book club edition, D-12.62(H) with review blurbs back of jacket and no price inside front jacket flap.
Nevertheless, it is an early copy, vintage, in very good condition. Black hardcover boards under jacket are near fine with only a slight hint of wear. Pages inside are crisp and clean, free of markings. Maps inside front and back endpapers. No foxing. Binding tight and straight. Dust jacket is very good but there is a hint of shelf wear to corners and edge from display.
This novel was James Jones 4th book and draws on his experiences during World War Two's Guadalcanal campaign. The novel portrays war and battle in a very realistic fashion and explores the idea that modern war is very personal and the experience of each soldier suffers the emotional horrors of war internally and alone. In this novel we feel the emotional response to battle; fear and death, along with the complications of fate, luck and circumstance. It is a must have addition to any well stocked literature library.
