This literary treasure is a mystery tale born of the global tensions that preceded the Second World War. Its parents are Ian Fleming, Graham Greene and the like. Len Deighton is the rebellious elder son of the mystery genre. Deighton burst onto the scene in 1962 with The Ipcress File. He took away the glamour of the parent novels, but kept the excitement, and developed the fast-moving plot. The book was a phenomenal success. The protagonist is a nameless man, we know little but that he is ordinary, middle class, average looking, and not terribly educated. Yet, these qualities are what makes him extraordinary. He keeps himself alive and HONEST, despite the fact he is ordinary appearing. As the narrator states in The Ipcress File; "What chance did I stand between the communists on one side and the Establishment on the other?". It is a story of a man beset by Russians and Neo-Nazis and by the snobbery, deception, and betrayal that haunts government bureaucracy.
