This is a near fine (almost like new) leather bound hardcover. 1983 Collectors Library of the Civil War. This copy is near fine inside and out. Bound in genuine leather, this edition has sewn binding, marbled endpapers, gold gilt page edges with attached silk ribbon bookmark. The durability of the sewn binding is apparent in this near fine collectors edition. Embossed front cover of soldiers marching in front of their ranking leaders on horseback. Gold lettering on black leather with embossed cover. Standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 376 pages.
This leather bound edition has been reproduced photographically from the original edition. It thus preserves the authenticity of the original including typographical errors and printing irregularities. The subtitle is; An Inside View of Life in The Southern Confederacy from Birth to Death. From original notes collated in the years 1861-1865. The author began writing this book immediately following the end of the war. He wrote from notes and recollections gathered during the Civil War. As a civilian, he wrote of the politics of the Confederacy and described many of the tensions within the government. He omits campaigns and battles he did not witness and tried (successfully) to paint honestly the inner life of the South and what was going on in cities and towns as the war raged on.
