The publishers preface speaks to the general opinion that this if the finest of Conrad's works, but there are several contenders for that rank among Conrad's acclaimed publications. Lord Jim has the sea and maritime places as its background, but it is certainly not a "sea story". Rather, it is a study of character as it unfolds in a background which happens to be the sea.
The book contains three double-spread lithographs and 16 smaller lithographs by Lynd Ward.
