This edition of The Peabody Sisters of Salem by Louise Hall Tharp has an intro from Millicent Bell and illustrations selected specially for this edition. Originally published in 1950, this is the story of the three Peabody sisters of Salem, Ma. The biography shows the role of women of that place and time. Two of the sisters were married to famous men - Sophia was married to Nathaniel Hawthorne and Mary to Horace Mann. The third sister, Elizabeth, never married. All three taught school. Though Elizabeth never married, she ran a famous bookshop on Boston's West Street where Hawthorne, Alcott and others gathered to discuss literature and and issues of the times. The biography shows that in the 19th century, politics and public life favored masculinity, private life ruled with femininity. These three women helped to balance that private/public life and the inequities that separated them. Their biography shows how Mary and Sophia were convinced that education was the key to social improvement and their efforts helped to further that cause.
